Wal-Mart Bangalored

Wal-Mart is expected to oursource some of the non-core IT/BPO services to India based service providers and the deal value is estimated anywhere between $300m to $500m, reports today’s edition of Economic Times.

Wal-Mart is the poineer in outsourcing in general.  Since ages they have been global sourcing various consumer goods from every part of the world and are considerd as gurus in efficient supply-chain and economical sourcing. I am surprised Wal-Mart is conservative in IT sourcing and a late starter by not doing any significant IT offshoring initiatives till now.  I believe the current economic scenario would push many companies to actively evaluate alternate and efficient sourcing models. Wal-Mart is a case in point.

If you know, Walmart is HQ-ed in the middle of nowhere (Bentonville, AR). Despite this, Walmart has built a BIG IT set-up right around the town for it’s internal use. In fact, it is this IT set-up — including Supply Chain Mgt, Transportation/Warehouse logistics, Inventory Management etc — which has helped Walmart gain an edge over it’s competiton during it’s growing up phase and helped it also retain it’s ruthless execution of it’s business model and annihilate competition.

To the best of my knowledge, Walmart has not offshored it’s IT services. Whereas it’s competition has engaged quite a bit of offshore vendors – names include Target.
